Movie review: Don Juan de Marco

So in pursuit of all things Johnny Depp (a constant, life-long pursuit), I finally watched Don Juan de Marco last night, and loved it. Yes, the loving it was mainly about Johnny Depp being in it, but the story is cute too. And of course, being the geeks that we are, Jeremy and I turned it into a movie about Changeling, because that just fit. :) (For the Changeling fans: Marlon Brando as a Grump Boggan who has entered Autumn, with Johnny Depp's character trying to pull him back from it. :) )

Generally speaking, it's not the sort of movie I might normally watch. It is sort of a chick flick, made doubly so with Johnny Depp being SOOOOOO cute in this movie. The scenes where he's wearing eye makeup to make him look like a woman are amazing. :) (His jawline ruins any hopes and dreams he may have had of being a drag queen, however.)

And I know that Marlon Brando is considered a great actor and such, but seriously... could the man EVER enunciate? In his life?

Bonus points for the part of the movie where they were singing the Bryan Adams movie theme in Spanish. Or some close facsimile of it, since I don't know Spanish. I just knew the melody.

Ed Wood

So we watched "Ed Wood" last night, and it's a rather funny movie. It probably helps that it's Johnny Depp working with Tim Burton. They've done 6 movies together, and I've finally seen all 6. :) (Two with "Ed" in the title... how weird is that?)

I think one of the things I loved the most was that the music reminded me of the music in "Mars Attacks" (another Tim Burton movie), in that bad sci-fi movie sort of way. Makes me wanna watch cheesy old sci-fi movies.

I think I'm finally going to break down and see "Plan 9 from Outer Space," a.k.a. the worst movie ever. Now that I know that Bela Lugosi is in part of it (he died while it was being made), it's practically a must. Plus, then something will finally defeat "Manos: The Hands of Fate" for the worst movie I've ever seen. :) I rarely turn a movie off, even if it's atrocious. "Manos" lasted about 15 minutes, even with the MST3K guys making fun of it... :)

Know what? Screw a bunch of theme days. Between days off, forgetting to post, and occasionally just having nothing to say on a given topic, I'm just gonna post whatever, regardless of day.

I may, however, maintain the End of the Work Week Wisdom, because I do like that. :)

So yeah, Bobert and I went to see "The Libertine" last night, because I had read the IMDB blurb on it last week... and as we're both big Johnny Depp fans, it seemed like the thing to do.

I really liked it a lot, as did he. It's about the Earl of Rochester, who was, in a lot of ways, sort of a British version of the Marquis de Sade. Obviously not identical, but you get the basic idea. But whereas "Quills" was a moderately good movie (IMHO) about the Marquis, this was a WONDERFUL movie about the Earl of Rochester, complete with 17th century British politics, plays, and syphillis. Whee! :)

It probably helped matters considerably that one of the characters, an actress, was rehearsing to play Ophelia in the movie. And I love Ophelia. :)

And Johnny Depp has the most amazing cheekbones known to humankind. Seriously. Amazing. :)

So yeah, that was definitely a nice little surprise, in a year when I pretty much think that I don't want to see a whole lot of movies... not because I don't like movies (you know I do), but because there aren't many good ones coming out this year! I believe there are three or four more this year that I'm really looking forward to, and one that I will probably see because the premise is just that ridiculous. :)
