New art!

I went to RustyCon this weekend, primarily because Jeremy was on a number of panels, talking about writing and gaming and such. We had some time to kill, so we stopped by the art show. At one end of the room, they had a "Print Shop," where you could buy prints of various pieces of art in the show (and some that weren't. I'm not sure if I just never noticed this at other cons, or if RustyCon does it a little differently. But I had some cash, and a couple of pieces had caught my eye!

I picked up two prints by Cori Dietsch--one of a digital work inspired by The Last Unicorn, and one of a watercolor of a raven. The raven one wasn't something we had seen in the art show, but I stumbled across it in the print shop and HAD to buy it. I may have a small obsession with ravens. :)

The other print was from an artist that I was familiar with through her Etsy shop, but was a piece that I had not seen previously. This was Jasmine Becket-Griffith of Strangeling, who paints the cutest creepy big-eyed girls. And here, it was an Alice in Wonderland and Dali-inspired piece (pictured to the right of this blog post). Again, small obsession. :)

I am now in desperate need of a whole lot of frames. I'll probably end up seeing what I can find at Goodwiil, because some of these prints really demand some funky frames, not the sleek, modern looking ones at most stores.

Sooner than you think...

Or at least that's what I like to tell myself. Halloween, that is. Yes, it's technically still 3 months away, but that doesn't matter to me. I hear the craft stores already have Christmas stuff out, so chances are good that the Halloween stuff is out as well. (No, I haven't been to the craft stores in a while now. Shocking, I know!)

I haven't a clue yet what I'm doing for Halloween, costume-wise or other. I think Katie might borrow my America McGee's Alice costume, which is good, because it means I can (and should) make myself something new. What that will be, however, remains to be seen. If you've got any suggestions, let me hear them. I think about the only thing I've pondered in the slightest would be a Harley Quinn costume, but I've been pondering that for a LONG time, and have never gotten anywhere with it...

I'm just excited that Halloween is a Saturday, which means there COULD be something going on that night, and I can dress up. :) Anyway, I think I like thinking ahead to Halloween right now because by October, it should be a lot cooler. Right? :)

Ooh, new music!

So in addition to all this reading I've been doing lately, Jerome has also been finding me new music. His latest find that I have to mention is called The Divine Madness. Now we originally looked at this band because Jerome has a tattoo on his forearm that says "Divine Madness." His is a Joker reference. The band's seems to be an Alice in Wonderland-ish reference. Sweet! :)

They have a female lead singer that reminds me of the lead singer of Stolen Babies, at least in terms of how she sounds. They don't look anything alike (which is good, because the lead singer of Stolen Babies is clearly our old roommate Jesi, in disguise.) The overall sound is a bit more on the metal side of things, though it's the more operatic metal, rather than screamy metal. And yes, that latter genre is totally a technical term. :)

And now, looking for a photo of the lead singer in her Queen of Hearts get up, I've discovered that there's a Madness album and a Bette Midler movie called Divine Madness. It's EVERYWHERE! :)

I think the other new additions to my iPod are all things I had heard before, though sometimes a bit different. Like the punk band tribute to Bad Religion... basically the same as it was before, only sometimes faster. :)

I might be becoming obsessed...

So I've always been a fan of Alice in Wonderland, all the way back to the cartoon version when I was a kid. I'm also very sure that I've read the book at least once. And, of course, there was that one time when I was Alice, at least the version from America McGee's video game. (Actually, I've worn the costume twice now. :) )

Yesterday, Jerome told me that he had found a version of Alice in Wonderland with Martin Short playing the Mad Hatter, and it was on our On Demand cable thingie. So I could watch it if I wanted to. I asked him who else was in it, and he listed off a pretty impressive cast list. I asked him who was playing Alice. He didn't know.

At any rate, after getting home from work and going out in the rainsnowyuck (that's a technical term), I decided I might as well watch it while I worked on some other stuff. Well, as it turns out, this made-for-TV version is amazing, and so I watched it pretty intently (though I do still need to go back and watch the end... meaning I'll probably just re-watch it tonight...). And, as it turns out, Alice is played by Tina Majorino... a.k.a. Deb from Napoleon Dynamite. :)

And, of course, the reason I didn't watch the end yet is because Jerome had an alarm set on the TV to tell him that the Sarah Connor Chronicles was going to be on in two minutes. Summer Glau (a.k.a. River from Firefly/Serenity) is in that. We immediately changed channels. :) (The show is atrocious. Summer is hot. :) )

(As an aside, I should point out that I'm not sure what to think about the fact that they're making a movie version of America McGee's Alice, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. I'm a little bothered by it, though, because I don't like her. Though that dislike is for no apparent reason. Other than she's not Kristy Swanson.)
