More about Twin Peaks

Jeremy in Twin Peaks

Is it not spiffy? :) It's a painting on the back of Twede's Cafe, which was used for the exterior shots of the Double R Diner on "Twin Peaks." Just one of the fun little things we got to see on our road trip. :)

It's pretty cool only being about an hour away from Twin Peaks related stuff. This also means, of course, that we are about an hour away from Snoqualmie Falls (for those not as obsessed with Twin Peaks as I am). I had only seen it on TV and in pictures prior to the road trip, and while it wasn't as big as I expected it to be, it was still neat. Jeremy also tells me that they can control how much water is coming out of the Falls at any given time, so they were probably letting less water through.

(I should know way more about this, as I've worked on stuff related to Snoqualmie Falls. Just proof that when you're editing, you're not always reading. :) )

Three day weekend!

So because of my extra long commute last week, I was able to get tomorrow off work. This is extra exciting because Jeremy is also off work tomorrow, so we're going on a mini road trip... wanna guess where to? Here, have some End of the Work Week Wisdom while you ponder the possibilities.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."
--Special Agent Dale Cooper, "Twin Peaks"

Yup, we're going to Twin Peaks. :)

More accurately, we're going to North Bend, Washington, which is where a lot of the exterior shots from Twin Peaks were filmed. We figured that now that I've finished watching the series, it would be a nice little day trip to take. My camera battery is charging as I type, and we're heading out some time tomorrow, with a goal of having lunch in North Bend... unless we decide that sleeping all morning is a better plan. In that case, dinner in North Bend. :)

David Lynch is on my bad list...

One of the things that Jeremy and I have been doing since we've been together is watching "Twin Peaks." In my case, it's been watching for the very first time. In his case, well, he sometimes quotes lines before the characters say them. (It's okay, I love him anyway. :) ) It has taken quite a while, because there has rarely been enough time to sit down and watch more than a couple of episodes at a time with our crazy schedules.

We finally finished the show on Sunday, as I ended up getting up ridiculously early on the one day I could have slept till noon. (For the record, that means it took us a month and a half to get through the show.) Jeremy had been warning me from about midway through the series that I was probably going to hate him when it was all over.

However, I've decided to lay the blame squarely where it belongs. On David Lynch. Cuz seriously, I was NOT a happy camper when I finally got to the end of the series. :( Suffice it to say, worst. ending. EVAR. Only that doesn't even begin to tell you how bad the last episode was. I think I would have been infinitely happier had I never watched that episode.

Of course, I should have expected it from David Lynch. I love Blue Velvet, but it's plenty weird. Lost Highway was even weirder. I can't remember if I watched Mulholland Drive or not, which shows you how much of an impression it may or may not have made on me. And generally speaking, these movies are also maddening.

(Oh, and he did the original Dune. I might have guessed that.)

We also watched Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me last night, and at least I knew how that was going to end, so it wasn't nearly as maddening to sit through all of the weirdness. I was bummed that Audrey Horne wasn't in it at all, but it seems they chopped a bunch of the characters when they made the movie. Ah well. (And in case it wasn't apparent from yesterday's post, I <3 Audrey. :) )

Overall though, I loved the show. I just hated the ending. I'll watch it again, just never again will I sit through that last episode. UGH!

Where to begin?

I have a great number of things that I could post about today. This may actually mean that I will post regularly this week. :) Being in Everett most of last week for work, with longer than usual commutes on either end, was awesome for getting crocheting done, but made internet use a little more difficult.

So I guess we'll work through this logically, in order. :)

Friday night, Jeremy ran a one-shot of Amber for myself and three other friends. The main reason for the one-shot was so that I could play the game before going to AmberCon US in April. Yay for signing up for a convention based around a game and world that I knew NOTHING about. :)

Now I have read at least some of the novels that the game/world are based on now, so I was one step ahead of two of the other players. The third had played before, and knew what he was doing, so his character was sort of the guide for the rest of us. And the rest of us, we were silly. :) We decided that we would all play characters from or based out of existing fictional works, so we had Sailor Moon, a Sith lord, and Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks (yeah, that was me). :) Much silliness, of course, but it was a lot of fun.

The thing that I like most about Amber is that it's a diceless system. Meaning no rolling dice for combat! (Among other things.) The system is also set up to not dictate your character's social or mental abilities with numbers, so that the character's social and mental acumen are based on the player's actual ability in those areas. I like this lots, because a) I hate having to make a character dumb when she needs to be good at other stuff, and b) I hate the idea of rolling dice to see whether or not you can convince someone else of something (for example--replace with any social type roll).

I also went into this without having touched the game book, and that actually didn't bother me. Now granted, when I did get to look at the book, everything clicked better in my head. The "tell me what you want to be able to do and I'll help you make your character" system worked for this character creation, but I'll be very happy to make my next character on my own. And I'm really looking forward to getting to select my games for ACUS now. :)

On a slightly tangental note (though related in my brain): garlic fries sound like they would be made of awesome, but the reality is that they aren't. My car still smells like garlic, after a 10 minute drive with garlic fries in it. :(
