Home of the hippies...
I'm in Berkeley for work this week, and while it is not as hippie-tastic as anticipated, it's still a pretty groovy place to be. I also have a sneaking suspicion that I just haven't been to the really hippie parts of town yet. :)
What I'm really loving, though, is my "commute" for the week. Yes, it's pretty much all uphill from my hotel to the library. But as I wandered my way across campus today, and kept going upward, I suddenly realized that I had been on a long, straight walkway for quite some time. I paused for a moment to glance behind me, knowing what I know of "viewing corridors" from UW, and was rewarded with a breathtaking view of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Yes, I will be taking my camera with me tomorrow, as the iPhone was sure to not do it much justice. :)
The other plus side of this "commute" is that it's downhill the whole way home in the evening. :) And I'm now mostly sure how to get to the cafe where I had lunch today, which seems to be the nearest and best option for lunch. Dinner is infinitely more varied, especially when I randomly stumble across a Japanese place that has super good gyoza. :)
(As an aside, I now understand why they had to reshoot the scene in Firefly where Mal eats a tomato slice with chopsticks about a million times. Tomatoes are slippery. :) )
Anyway, I'm here all week, and no hopes of getting to go home early. At least it's sunny, even if it is a bit chilly thus far. It should be into the 60s by Wednesday though, and at least it doesn't seem to be dropping below freezing at all.

Crafts? Yeah, I still do those...
I was going back through some old blog posts yesterday, and I realized I haven't really talked much about what crafty projects I've got going on lately. Part of this might be that I haven't had many crafty projects lately. :) I'm working on more soap sweaters for Seattle Sundries mostly, and not much for my own shop.
I am working on a few neat things for Christmas though. I decided to give all of the kids on my mom's side of the family crocheted things. Some of them were things I had worked on previously, though I am now faced with the need to figure out how to make a teapot to go with Darci-Anna's tea cups. I know what I'm doing for the basic shape and the handle, but the spout has got me all confused. Teapot spouts are really strange when you try to break them down into simple shapes!
I still have to work on Peter's gift, of course, but at least Sarah (my sister) told me just what he wanted, down to the colors it should be. I wonder if that's more of an attempt to match his room than his personal preferences, but I don't know a lot of almost 3 year olds, so who knows if he has a personal preference yet. :)
And whether the new baby (Sarah's due in early March) will have an afghan at Christmas or not is debateable. For the sake of my sanity, I may put that off until after Christmas. :)
As for my shop, I know what I WANT to be working on, when I have the time. I sold four Decapitated Dollies to one person, so that section of my shop is looking a little sad. All the historic ones are gone now, and all of the dark haired girls as well. Those blondes just won't sell!
I also bought a sweater that I'm going to take apart for the yarn, which will then become some hats. I think that one of them is going to be my entry for the Secret Serenity challenge of the Big Damn Crafters, and I think I just figured out how to make it work even better. Now whether anyone will actually want to buy and wear this hat is another matter entirely. Here's a hint for those who will get it: layer cake dress hat. :)
And in other news, I joined Twitter today, because people have been talking about it on the EtsyRain message board. You may find me here.

Cuteness overload!
I do seem to have an obsession with making Firefly/Serenity related things lately. Part of this is probably related to the Big Damn Crafters monthly challenges, all of which are Firefly/Serenity related. Of course, I seem to be focusing on the characters that aren't related to the theme this month. :) The theme is Inara, and I'm making stuff based on the guys. I'm just having trouble thinking of something elegant enough for Inara that I could crochet. :)
Instead, I keep making cute things. Like this Jayne cupcake. Because I like making crocheted cupcakes, and I have this strange obsession with that hat of his. :) I thought about making cupcakes for other characters, but I think Kaylee might be the only other one who works, with two buns/cherries on top. :) Just can't see a Mal-cake or a Simon-cake. :) Seriously, how would you tell those apart, when rendered as a cupcake?!
More cute stuff (in the form of Decapitated Dollies) to appear in the near future. Only one of the cute things is actually kind of morbid. People finally talked me into a blood and guts version of a Decapitated Dollie. It's interesting. :)

Ah, inspiration!
One of the things I think I like best about joining up with street teams on Etsy is the inspiration that other members provide me. In this case, the one I have to thank is Siarh, from the Big Damn Crafters street team. It's a very new street team for Browncoats (fans of Firefly/Serenity, for the uninformed), and we're mostly just a social street team, designed to have some fun. :)
Siarh asked me if I could make her a Jayne hat, but she wanted it to be a bun cover, for a large bun. I gladly agreed, thinking how cute this would be. I also decided that what might be even cuter would be a PAIR of miniature Jayne hats, designed for when you wear your hair in two buns. Siarh didn't want earflaps on her larger one, but I had to put them on the tiny ones. They're totally non-functional, but totally cute. :)
Of course, with how long my hair is getting, I'm not sure that I can even wear the pair that I made for myself. :) But I'll try it one of these days. In the meantime, the pictured pair are available in my shop. And if they sell out, don't despair... I'll be making more of these. They are just too cute to not make more! :)

This is too frickin' sweet.
As some of my faithful readers may know, I make hats similar to the one worn by Jayne Cobb in "The Message" episode of Firefly. Now, oddly enough, the majority of these hats have been sent to Arizona. I have a huge following there... or perhaps it's that my best saleswoman lives there, and convinces all of her friends to buy my hats. :)
Well, a few weeks ago, there was a convention called Dark Con in Arizona, probably the Phoenix area. It was a smaller convention, one where the stars and the fans mingled freely. So the chances of meeting a given star were pretty high.
One of the guests at the convention was Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee on Firefly. And one of the people who bought one of my hats was wearing his Jayne hat...
Voila! One of my hats is now in a picture with Kaylee. I am ecstatic!

Oi... I spent a lot of time sick and otherwise not at work last week. Monday, my car wouldn't run, so I stayed home till I could get it to the shop. Tuesday was normal. Wednesday, I got a migraine around lunchtime that took almost a full day to leave me alone. So Thursday was spent recovering, and Friday was preparation for Vulture Fest. All in all, I only worked a day and a half. Craziness.
So unsurprisingly, there are a few articles from my downtime. :)

In other news, Vulture Fest was not too bad, but then I ended up spending most of what I made on other peoples' stuff. Specifically jewelry and soap. Cuz I love homemade soap, and though I still haven't found the Almond Oatmeal Raspberry stuff that I love, plain almond is pretty good too. :)
I am, unfortunately, pretty badly windburned, and swamped as all get out. I have a lot of stuff that I'd like to work on, but we'll see how much of that actually gets done. Last week was fairly productive on the crafts, not so much on the writing. This week, if I'm smart about it, should go in the other direction. But I may not be smart about it, as it's far easier to crochet and watch a movie than write and watch a movie... at least for me. :)

Crazy busy gaming weekend, involving three LARPs. This ended up equaling Jerome and I losing our characters (and making new ones), me becoming a Harpy again, and me becoming a Ductus through the cunning use of lies (not flags). But hey, no one has checked me yet to see if I'm a big liar. Because that character is. :)
It's a month to DragonCon now, and Abney Park and Ego Likeness are confirmed. This means I'm going to be seeing 3 of my favorite bands/artists in the world, along with 2 bands that I like quite a bit. I am happy. :)
With DragonCon a month away, this means I'm working on costumes like a madwoman. Right now, it looks like I'm doing four costumes and one other outfit over the course of three days.
Friday night, it'll be Death from Sandman. I had to find a new pair of black jeans, but I still had everything else I needed for that costume.
Saturday day, it'll be Kaylee from Firefly. I still need to find one or two patches for her jumpsuit, and make sure that I can do my hair in the little buns that she does in the pilot episode. And sew the patches on. And maybe find a necklace that looks good. Maybe.
Saturday night, it depends on who is playing. Most likely, though, this will just be the night that I goth out.
Sunday day, I think I'm going with Alice from America McGee's Alice, only because I already have every piece of that costume. :)
Sunday night, which is when I suspect AP will be playing, I will probably revive my Dark Green Fairy costume that I wore for their last show that I got to see, though it will be undergoing some serious modifications, mainly for the different season and climate. I want to try to make some yarn hair falls, but I'm not sure how feasible that will be. I need a different shirt, so I may go back to Goodwill to pick up something I saw on Saturday. And I really should rethink the stripey tights, because it's likely to be too hot for those... I'm definitely rethinking the armwarmers. :)
But yeah, that's gonna be a lot of clothes to pack, particularly as it involves a couple of large dresses/poofy skirts. The good news, of course, is that Jerome will prolly cram all of his stuff into one bag, leaving plenty of trunk space for Jesi and I. w00t! :)

In other news, you would think that putting three adults and two cats into a tiny two bedroom apartment would get a bit crowded, but we're making a pretty decent go of it. Still need another bookcase, but we're working on how we can get that... :)

Got one crochet project done last night, and another one started. The finished project is kinda a sekrit surprise, so no details here. The other one I started is the Jayne hat, from Firefly. I'm not 100% pleased with the pattern I'm using, so I'll be looking for a new one, but it is turning out decently well. Of course, the original is a knitted hat with earflaps, and mine will be crocheted, but it'll work out okay, I think. Especially if I can find the right kind of pattern. Or I may be able to work up my own, based on the one I'm using presently.
I need to work on making some more Valentines for the craft fair, which I may do tonight, if I have some time. Supposed to be going to an OWBN workshop at Denny's, but my car wouldn't start this morning. I'm hoping it was just the cold affecting the battery, and that it'll start fine after work today. If not, I guess I'll be trying to find a way to get it over to the dealership in the morning, and let them tell me if it's the battery (my best guess) or the starter (god I hope not). At any rate, thank goodness for being under warranty... :)
Speaking of Valentines, yeah, I'm gonna hafta work on something else for that... I just don't have any good ideas at the moment. What do you give someone for Valentine's Day that is a little bit practical, but still handmade? If I can't come up with something fitting both of those criteria, I'm gonna go with practical but store-bought, because there is a limit to how many ultimately useless handmade objects you can give someone. Yeah, I know, the handmade stuff comes from the heart and all that, but seriously. I know there is a limit. :)
Hmmmm... something to ponder for a bit, I suppose...

Hmmm... I don't think I watched any new movies this past week, though I did halfway watch "Sin City" yesterday, while attempting valiantly not to fall asleep. Amazing how WATCHING a football game for a few hours can wear you out. Well, I was moving the makeshift down marker thingie, by myself, but honestly, that's not much work. :)
I've now been all the way through the Firefly DVDs twice, and I can honestly say that I'm not tired of them yet. :) Probably won't get tired of them, either. They're just so spiffy, and I notice new things every time I see them. :)
Might have to go buy some DVDs this week. It's been a bit since I've bought any new ones. I should probably also see about selling some of the ones that I honestly don't know why I've kept this long. Seriously. I've bought some BAD DVDs, and my DVD shelves are getting full to the bursting point... so it's time to do a little cleaning... :)
Speaking of cleaning, oi. I need to do a lot of that around the apartment. So that's on the agenda for one night this week. Just not tonight. I have dance class, and I know it's going to kick my ass... :(

No movie talk today, because all I watched last week was "The Professional," and honestly it was on more as background noise than to actually watch.
Instead, how about Firefly talk? :)
Seriously. I know a lot of people who have been talking about this show for ages. I didn't get to see any of it until right before Christmas, and I was instantly hooked. So hooked that yesterday, I went out and bought the entire series. And then sat and watched all of the episodes that I hadn't seen yet. Yeah, that hooked. :)
Now, I need to go buy "Serenity." Usually, I only buy movies that I've already seen, and know I like. In this case, I'll buy it without seeing it. Because if the series is that good, the movie has to be at least equally so.
I've already had one request to borrow the series. I think I will probably loan it out, but I might not want to just yet. I might need to spend another entire day watching it before I'm willing to let other people borrow it. It's just so damn good!
In other news, I find it very wrong that I went out shopping yesterday without having to wear a coat or even a jacket. 3/4 length sleeved T-shirt and jeans, and I was fine. It's JANUARY, people! This is not right!

Well, I'm back. :)
I had an immensely odd Christmas, in that I received no movies as gifts this year. My dad gave me a copy of Empire Records, but that was because Sarah and Nathaniel were giving him a big bag of movies they didn't want anymore, and when I saw it, I said I wanted it!
So I bought myself a few movies. :) And watched all of my new stuff. :)
"Empire Records" - The funny thing is that after watching it, I'm pretty sure I had never actually seen this movie! :) But it's decent, I suppose, in that early-mid 90s sort of way... :)
"Clue" - Because when a Tim Curry movie is in the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart, you buy it. And watch it. With all three endings. :)
"Anchorman" - Yes, I now own a Will Ferrell movie. It will not likely be joined by any of his other movies. But this one is awesome. "I love lamp."
"Constantine" - So much better than I expected it to be, so since it was on sale... :) Anyways, Rachel Weiss is hot. :)
I also got to watch "Gone with the Wind" and "Finding Nemo" while I was at my mom's house, because I was sick for one of the days I was there. And I also got my first exposure to "Firefly," which means that now I want to see the whole series, and then watch "Serenity."
As a side rant, I'd like to comment that $3.50 to rent a movie is ricockulous, and so I'm going to Family Video to see what their prices look like, and because Thor tells me they have all of "Firefly" there. Hopefully they have "Deadwood" too. Because at $3.50 per DVD rental fees, 6 DVDs just became retardedly expensive. :(
