So as a HUGE Neil Gaiman fan, I'm always anxiously awaiting any new movies that he's involved in. And though Beowulf was somewhat disappointing and Stardust left me stomping my feet a bit, I can't complain too much. I feel pretty much the same about Coraline.
The movie is undeniably cute, between the stop motion and the overall cuteness of the story (despite it being a little scary in places, at least for little kids). I tried really hard not to squee too loud during the They Might Be Giants song, when Coraline's father's voice suddenly and unmistakably became that of John Linnell. :)
The big issue I had with it, unfortunately, was something that Thaddeus told me about on Sunday--they added a character to the story. Normally, no big deal. Until it has the effect of lessening the main character. :( I could go into a big huge rant here, too, about girl power and such, but I don't want to ruin the story too much for those who haven't read the book or seen the movie.
Oh yeah, which reminds me. Read the book. :) The movie is wonderful, but the book is equally so, if not better. I've only read it once, and it's been a little while since I read it, but I think that you'll find the book and movie are pretty wonderfully similar. Except for that extra character. *sigh*

Yay Friday!
The weekend will be nice, even if it is going to be sheer insanity. I think we've given up on the idea of going to the roller derby bout tomorrow night, especially as it starts at 5:30 (Jerome is off work at 5 and I'm at PRFM till 6, with hopes that he can help me cart my stuff home after). Sunday is theoretically going to be tea and looking at cherry blossoms at UW, but I'm waiting to see what the weather looks like on Sunday first. If it's nasty cold and rainy, I'll probably just stay home and sew. :)

The show was awesome!
Let me just mention a few reasons why:
1) Harvey Danger opened for them. I didn't even know Harvey Danger was still around. Of course, I only knew one song by them (which they didn't play), but I still like the new stuff that I heard.
2) Confetti cannons. Even if John L. did ruin the surprise of "when," as he said before they started "Dr. Worm," that it was time for the confetti cannons, it's still fun. This was the third time I've seen them that they have had the confetti cannons, though the first time that I didn't get a piece of confetti. Ah well. :)
3) They played "Mr. Me"! This is not a song that I'm used to hearing them play, and this may have been the first time I heard them play it live. It's just a little song that I kind of like, and just utterly weird to hear it live.
4) The "Conga" song, which I think John F. might have just made up. Because there has to be a conga line at every TMBG show. I wasn't in this one, because I was sitting in the middle of a row on the balcony, and didn't want to try to climb over everyone in my row.
5) Phonecalls from the Dead. Richard Milhouse Sagan (though I thought they were saying "Satan" at first). Craziness that makes no sense. I love it! :)
and 6) Jerome had a wonderful time. I was concerned that he wouldn't really enjoy it as much as I always do, because it's really not his sort of music or show, but he loved it! :)
Honorable mention to the Moore Theater because it's a super neat venue, and the stained glass in the ceiling convinced me that the half-formed plan I had for a hat color combination will look good. :)

My iPod knows what's going on...
I thought about putting my iPod on ONLY They Might Be Giants songs today, but I decided against it. Instead, it's on random, like it is most days.
I think it's played at least half a dozen TMBG songs in about 3 1/2 hours. This is not entirely surprising, if you know how much TMBG I have on my iPod, but I'm definitely noticing it more today. I know that my iPod can't REALLY be psychic, but I often attribute it with such a skill. :)
So yeah, They Might Be Giants show tonight, and YAY! I am excited! :) If you like TMBG, and have never seen them live, you have to make every attempt to do so. Seriously. Their music is so much fun in general, and it becomes at least 10 times more fun in concert. I think there have been studies done to prove this. :)

Blah...
I spent most of the weekend ill, but I got a surprising amount done, too. Mostly, this involved a bunch of cleaning up our bedroom, and doing the normal weekend chores. I also started making a bunch of baby sized hats, which are just the cutest things in the world. No pictures of them yet, but hopefully I'll get some time to take pictures later on. Somehow, lounging on the couch and crocheting was mostly all I wanted to do.
I did get a little bit of writing done too, but when I get sick, one of the main symptoms is almost always a fuzzy brain, which has difficulty coming up with words. I do gain the ability to hyper-focus, which is part of why I can be so productive at crocheting when I'm not feeling well. I'm not sure if this is a particularly useful skill or not, but I'll take what I can get, I suppose.
And I'm feeling mostly better today, though still not great. It is rather annoying that I get sick only on the weekends, but I suppose it's better than being sick during the week, when I would have to take sick time that I don't have access to until the end of November. *sigh*
At any rate, we bought our tickets for They Might Be Giants on Friday, for the concert on Wednesday night. Jerome has never seen them before; I think I've lost count as to how many times I've seen them. :) (I want to say this will be the 10th time, but I could be wrong.) That's about the only plans we have this week, though I think Jerome wants to get his ears stretched on Friday, assuming that Laughing Buddah still has the Decepticon 5/8 inch earrings. :)

Wandering around at the mall last night, we ended up in a toy store... and as everyone knows, you put three quasi-adults in a toy store, they will play for hours on end. Well, maybe not hours on end, but I do have some evidence of a time-stealing black hole at the mall. I think we were there for about two hours all told, and I REALLY don't know where the time went, especially as we were only in three stores in that time.
Anyways, the toy store. Oh. My. God. There was a lot of silly stuff that I didn't care to look at there, but there were also a bunch of toys that I remembered from when I was a kid (and the inevitable point was brought up that the difference between when I was a kid and when the guys I was shopping with were kids was huge... *sigh*...) and then reproductions of a lot of even OLDER toys. So I am very much looking forward to my niece and nephew getting a little bit older, so that they can play with some of the neat toys I found there.
I did not, however, find a goose, and I was actually looking for a small stuffed goose. It has to do with a game. :)
Actually, right now, it's just all about me being a big kid, because I also got some new TMBG stuff last night (stuff I ordered a while back), and one of those was the "Here Come the ABC's" CD, which is VERY much meant for small children. I like it anyways.
And then I stayed up way past my bedtime. :p

Two parts for the post today: one about the weekend, and one about me being a consumer. Hurrah! :)
The excursion to St. Louis was a great time, and I got to do all of the things I wanted to do, too! :) Grant and I went to Laumeier for a little bit when we first got there, and wandered around. Cromlech Glen is still technically closed, but we checked it out anyway. It really is one of my favorite places in the whole world. :)
After that, we went and wandered around the Loop, both of us finding CDs to buy at Vintage Vinyl, and spending a whole lot of time at Phoenix Rising. I used to really like that store, when it was mostly sort new-age-y stuff. Then it got really pop culture-y, and I didn't like it so much. It's still more along the pop culture-y lines, but I think I've learned to appreciate it for what it is, and not lamenting what it used to be. So we browsed for a good long while, and I, surprisingly, did not buy all of the pirate stuff... :)
We got dinner with Megan, Robert, and Leslie at a Thai place, and it was tasty, though mine was a bit spicy... and I even got mild! Ran right across the street to the Pageant, and got pretty decent spots on the floor.
The opening act, Michael Leviton, was this geeky looking guy with a ukelele, with very clever lyrics. I liked him a lot. :) TMBG, of course, rocked. A good long set, with two encores, and they played "Istanbul," which is what really matters. I'm pretty sure they've played that every time I've seen them. :) Megan and I tried to start a conga line during "Dr. Worm," and failed, but then another one came by, so we jumped on. :)
I was so tired and so sore when we got back to C-dale, but it was so worth it. :)

After spending a lazy Sunday morning-into-afternoon recovering, Jesi and I went out shopping, and I finally bought myself an iPod. Yeah, I'm a little late in jumping on the bandwagon, but waiting this long meant that I could get a 60 gig, in black.
60 gigs. My iPod is bigger than my computer's internal hard drive. This makes me cry a little on the inside. But it also makes me happy, because I have ALL of the music from my computer on my iPod, and still have room to spare. Almost 8000 songs on there at the moment, and it's over 30 gigs... so I really did need the 60 gig version... :)
Still figuring out some of the details on how to make it do what I want, but I've got a basic knowledge of what I can do... luckily I know plenty of people who have had theirs for a while, and can help me figure out what I can't get on my own. :)
So I've got it set up on my desk, with tiny speakers which sound mostly like crap, but hey, it's slightly better sound than the internal speaker on my computer, I can listen to any song I own whenever I want, and I can stop burning so many CDs to bring with me to work... I can just load them onto the iPod and go from there... w00t! :)

Rather than the normal format for End of the Work Week Wisdom, I will direct you to Everything I needed to know I learned from listening to They Might Be Giants. So it's like 30+ pieces of wisdom for the price of one!
Except I don't get paid even when I post only one... damn... :(
In other news, it's absolutely frickin' gorgeous outside, and I'm sitting inside, at work. This, my friends, blows chunks. The boss is out of town, one co-worker is off running errands, and the other is at lunch. I think I'm gonna try to bust outta here early, since I need to go mail one pair of Docs off to their happy new owner... any excuse to enjoy a little of this weather!
I'm hoping desperately that it will be this nice tomorrow, because I really wanna hit Laumeier before the show. If it's like this tomorrow? We're golden. :)
I'm also hoping that maybe my new Docs will arrive today, though I won't start breaking them in till next week... breaking in new shoes tomorrow is just gonna make my feet super grumpy. So screw a bunch of that. :)
Blah... this will be the longest. afternoon. EVAR. Must find something to entertain myself with!

So Saturday is the TMBG show, and I'm super duper excited. It's been over 3 1/2 years since I saw them last, so that's one of the main reasons why I'm excited. I'm also excited cuz Megan is going again, and we always have fun when we see them together. And Grant is going as well, which is super duper awesome kewl. (It's also kewl that the other folks are going, but I'm mostly happy to be going with Megan and Grant! :) )
So the last time I was going to see them, which was the 7th time, I posted this. Just in case anyone wanted a recap of the first 6 times I saw them. :)
I am very proud to say, though, that TMBG is my most frequently seen band. Even though I've missed at least two opportunities to see them that I know of. Shame, because that would make this an even 10... :) Not that I'll stop at 10... there were people that they interviewed on "Gigantic" who had seen them a LOT more... I suspect those were New York people, who probably get a lot more opportunities than I do... ah well...
Anyways, yeah, Saturday is gonna be a great day... I totally can't wait! :)

Wow... between this weekend and last night, I have a whole bunch of new music to mention. Woo hoo! :)
First mention goes to "The Unquiet Grave III." I have had 1, 2, and 4 (though they're not all exactly called that) for a good long while, but somehow, 3 had eluded me. I had seen it online, I had just never broken down and ordered it. Well, Megan and I got to do some shopping in KC, and the magnetic pull of Hot Topic drew me in, as per the usual. Mostly, they just had the same old stuff as our HT, but they had this CD set, and I was ecstatic. (They also had a kid who I swore must have been 12 working there, and he offered to teach me how to tie a tie. But the tie I wanted, while very kewl and skullerific, was way too long for me. Ah well.)
And then we have Cursive, The Editors, and The Postal Service. The latter two are most definitely in that whole redo of the 80s thing that is so big right now, and has been for a bit. Both have similarities to Interpol. I am hooked, particularly on The Postal Service, though I suspect The Editors are going to grow on me quickly. Cursive is a bit different, and I haven't had a chance to listen to them thoroughly yet, but it seems pretty damn good thus far. I've been warned that it's mostly their newest CD that is good, and that their older stuff isn't so great, so I'll pass that warning along.
Mostly, though, right now, I'm really looking forward to the TMBG show (2 1/2 more weeks!)... and listening to a whole lot of TMBG... something about Megan not letting me switch that CD out for anything else pretty much the whole time we were in my car over the weekend. :)

Had a great weekend all around, and finally got to see "Gigantic," which is the TMBG documentary. It was very kewl, and lots of random. I like random. :)
At work every day this week, which means it will probably be a long week... *sigh*... got lots to do, too, which adds to that. Good news is that I've already gotten one chunk of stuff done, and can probably get another chunk done tomorrow... in theory, at least... :)
Oh, we got to start both of the new TT games that I'm playing in this weekend. Deadlands on Friday, hunter on Saturday.
The Deadlands game was a good time. Most of the game was character creation, but I've definitely already got the hang of my character, Emelia, which is fun. She's a mad scientist, and I've already turned in one potential invention... I'm planning to make a utility belt, a la Batman, sooner or later... :)
The hunter game was also a good time, though there was much character creation all throughout the day. Jericho is already proving to be considerably more coherent than River, but that's quite alright. Someone needs to be coherent and bold... mostly bold. :) And yeah, the Telepathy numina is RIPPED! One more level, and I can get into peoples' heads even if they're in another room... wow...
Oh, and in other fun gaming news, I've got 5 of the remaining 6 Vampire books that I didn't own winging their way to me as I type. That means I only need to track down one more book, and I will own a version of every Vampire book, from 1st edition through revised. This is ricockulous. However, what is more ricockulous is the likelihood of me finding that one last book... because, of course, it's a 1st ed. book. *sigh*
I'm also going to need a bigger Vampire shelf... :)

That means I only need to track down one more book, and I will own a version of every Vampire book, from 1st edition through revised. This is ricockulous. However, what is more ricockulous is the likelihood of me finding that one last book... because, of course, it's a 1st ed. book. *sigh*

Friday Five!
1. If you could only choose 1 cd to ever listen to again, what would it be? Metropolis 2002, cuz it's the one with the remix of "Until the End of the World," which is the Apoptypgma Berzerk song that I love!
2. If you could only choose 2 movies to watch ever again, what would they be? Interview with the Vampire and Fight Club... though it was really hard to pick only two here!
3. If you could only choose 3 books to read ever again, what would they be? Vampire: the Masquerade, 3rd ed., The Stand by Stephen King, and Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite
4. If you could only choose 4 things to eat or drink ever again, what would they be? Water, toasted ravioli, buffalo chicken strips, and ice cream! :)
5. If you could only choose 5 people to ever be/talk/associate/whatever with ever again, who would they be? Ugh, this one is really hard... I'd get sick of most people if I could only talk to them... but there's a few that I could never get sick of... My brain is a bizarre, bizarre place... I'm walking into work this morning, when I realize that the song that is running through my head is "Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love" by They Might Be Giants. That's off of Flood. I haven't listened to that in AGES! Luckily, I got it on CD not too long ago, so I can listen to it when I get home, if I wanna... but it's just soooo weird for a song that I haven't heard for (easily) more than a year to be stuck in my head...
Work is still work... I'm still working on the really long HTML file, though I'm to the proofreading stage now... and I got through a good chunk of it yesterday. Go me! :)
Forgot to mention yesterday that I finally got a copy of Encyclopedia Vampirica! I ended up having to buy it on eBay, cuz they were out of them here in town. But seeing as I probably got a better deal on it on eBay (even factoring in the discount I get when I buy it here vs. the shipping I had to pay for the eBay copy), I'm pretty happy! And, of course, poor editing aside (the bane of White Wolf books), I love it! :) Now I have to go back through my "genealogy" of Vampires that I've been working on for a few years now, and make sure it matches with the stuff in the book... *sigh*...
Oh, who am I kidding... I love this stuff! :)
And an update on Jack & Jubilee's background, for those who are interested: it hit 15 pages last night... with a bunch more to go... :)

2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit? I definitely want to go to Germany!

Day 5 of the ScaryWhiteGirl's vacation!
I can only hear partially out of my left ear at the moment. My right ear is much better. The concert was frickin' AWESOME! :) I didn't get stepped on, didn't get smushed, or anything like that... :) They played a lot of songs from "No!" which is their new kids music album, and a lot of other stuff that I didn't know... I felt soooooo out of the loop! But they played enough songs that I did know... :)
Got "I Got Lost" and "No!" and a T-shirt at the concert, and picked up the newest Apoptygma Berzerk at Vintage Vinyl before the show... so all in all, a really good night! :)
Well, it's the last day of the real vacation. Just got the weekend, and then back to work on Monday. *sigh*... there's gonna be a lot of stuff to do when I get back to work...

Day 4 of the ScaryWhiteGirl's vacation has begun. Early today, cuz I've got stuff to do before we drive up to get Macke, and head up to St. Louis to go see They Might Be Giants. w00t! :)
Because I have time, let's review the times I have seen They Might Be Giants.
The first time was in the fall of 1992, near the beginning of my freshman year of college, at Mississippi Nights. I went with Nate and Chris, but we were meeting a bunch of BBS folks there. Within five minutes of arriving, Tom (Katar) had proposed to me... that was bizarre... :) I think that was the time we got them to play the theme song from "Sesame Street" for "Stump the Band"...
The second time was Pointfest 1, which I think was in the early fall of 1993. Because TMBG is what Pointfest is really all about! :) But you know, getting Midnight Oil's autographs was a bonus as well! :)
The third time was Pointfest 2, which would have been the summer of 1994. This was the time that I drove like 6 other people to Pointfest... two of whom lived in South County... and they went to see the Violent Femmes, who were headlining that year. So while most of my passengers and I sat in the van, they were still watching the Femmes play. So it took FOREVER till we got out of there! But TMBG was still kewl! :)
The fourth time was in Kirksville, in March of 1995. My mom, brother, and sister (Megan) all came up for this one. It rocked! :) We wanted them to play "Crimson and Clover" if they did "Stump the Band," but they didn't. Bummer. This was also where Megan and I got our fear of people who sing about fresh garbage and play banjo... *shudder*...
The fifth time was a day or so before Pointfest 4, in August of 1995. I think this is the time I wore sandals to a TMBG show... at Mississippi Nights... bad idea! :) Jim and Carrie went with me this time, and it was a good time, even if I couldn't be in the quasi-mosh pit... :)
The sixth time was Pointfest 4, in August of 1995. The last one that TMBG played at... *sniffle*... this was the year of the water bottle fight (I was in the seats, and one nearly hit me). This was also the year that I wandered around Pointfest with my nearly waist length hair (which had just been dyed red) all in tiny braids, and had written all over myself with permanent marker... :) That was fun... :)
And now I get to see them tonight... after nearly 7 years... it's been WAY too long...

After a very long time without getting to see any concerts, it looks like the ScaryWhiteGirl is back in the concert-going world! :) I'm going to go see kick in emergency on Friday night, hopefully with gwarocks and the illustrious Gabby making the excursion down to C-dale to see them as well! w00t! :)
And I get to see They Might Be Giants (spelled out for Assie's benefit) on August 1st, up in St. Louis. double w00t! This will be the 7th time I've seen them... should be fun! :)

Argh... I just found out that They Might Be Giants are playing at The Pageant (in St. Louis) on August 1st... I'm actually off work that entire week, cuz it's when Megan is moving down... and I know she'd love to go see them also... but I just dunno if I wanna make the drive to St. Louis and back, cuz I'd have to come back THAT NIGHT so that the Old Man can get to work on Friday morning...
